Euro Flats in Art History
Dec 18, 2016
Being the only oyster native to Europe, European Flats (aka “Belons”) have figured in more great art than all the other species combined. Uberslurper Arthur Goldman recently sent me these two classic celebrations of appetite, Jan Steen’s 1658 Girl Eating Oysters and Max Beckmann’s 1943 The Oyster Eaters (that’s his wife getting all aphrodisiacky in the painting). Any other nominations out there for Best Oyster Art?
If you’re not familiar with European Flat oysters, check them out. They’re amazing!
